Monarch Migration and Nature Tour
Feb. 28 – Mar. 8, 2009
Please check back for itinerary

This nine day, eight night tour leaves McAllen, Texas on the morning of Feburary 28 and travels across the desert north to reach the lush pine mountains of the Michoacán highlands in time to experience the world famous phenomenon of millions of monarch butterflies as they prepare for their migration back north. We will then spend a day in beautiful colonial Patzcuaro, and a couple of days near by at a lovely private Hacienda, where we will learn about reforestation efforts in Central Mexico. On our way back to McAllen, we will spend an evening and morning in Talaquepaque, a craft center on the edge of Guadelajara, and an evening and morning in the beautiful colonial mining town of Zacatecas. We will arrive in McAllen on the evening of March 8.

Monarch migration: The migration of millions of Monarch Butterflies from the northern U.S. & Canada back to Mexico each year is one of the natural wonders of the world. The Monarch Biosphere Reserve has recently been named a World Heritage Site, and is truly one of the world’s most amazing natural wonders.

The Monarchs spend the winter on several mountain tops in the State of Michoacan, as well as one in the nearby State of Mexico. A few sites are open to the public and are accessible by hiking or on horseback. We will decide which reserve to visit once we reach the area, based on local information about where the butterflies are gathered and most active, and according to the physical abilities of our participants. Being in the presence of millions of butterflies is an experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.

Dia de los Muertos Tour
Oct 28 – Nov. 5, 2009
Itinerary

This nine day, eight night tour leaves McAllen, Texas on the morning of October 28 and travels across the desert north to reach the lush pine mountains of the Michoacán highlands that are located in the Volcanic Belt that cuts across Mexico. We will spend 5 days experiencing the world famous celebration of the Day of the Dead, and exploring the natural and cultural sites the region has to offer. We will spend several days at a lovely private Hacienda, where we will learn about reforestation efforts in Central Mexico. Returning to McAllen, we will spend an evening and morning in Talaquepaque, a craft center on the edge of Guadelajara, and an evening and morning in the beautiful colonial mining town of Zacatecas before returning to McAllen on the evening of November 5.

Patzcuaro and Dia de los Muertos: The Day of the Dead is when Mexicans welcome home their departed loved ones with flowers, food and all night vigils.

This beautiful and colorful tradition is rooted in the pre-hispanic culture, and has grown into a world-renown festival that attracts thousands of people from around the world who flock to Pátzcuaro to join in the colorful festivities that surround the event. The lake region and the Purépecha highlands is world famous for the elaborate tradition of decorating village cemeteries, making home alters festooned with flowers and food offerings, and candle lit vigils designed to welcome home dead relatives who are believed to visit on the first day of November each year. We invite you to join us in this celebration of life – through respect for the dead. The trip includes an overnight trip into the Mesita Purépecha (Tarascan highlands) to visit quiet candle lit cemeteries and culminating in a festive, frenzied celebration.

One of the greatest challenges of our time is to conserve and restore the precious natural habitats upon which healthy ecosystems depend. The staff of parks, botanical gardens, museums, and educational institutions find themselves on the frontline of the battle to reverse human caused
environmental
deterioration that threatens our
way of life and the health of our planet.

Nature Works brings decades of success-
ful grant writing experience within reach
of even small organizations. Also offered
are compelling publications and
consulting on habitat restoration.
